Origin and history
The Maison de justice des Bains is located in Tours, in the Old Towers, Place Grégoire-de-Tours. According to tradition, it was built at the site of ancient Roman thermal baths. The building, built around 1470, initially housed the Justice of the Saint-Gatien chapter, called Justice of the Baths. Its current architecture combines a 15th-century main house body, a 17th-century north wing, and reworked 18th-century pierces. After serving as an annex to the seminary from 1815, he was enrolled in the Lycée Paul-Louis Courier in 1905.
The monument was restored in 1927 and 1976, although parts, such as the west building and its gate, were demolished. It has been a historical monument since 1927 and illustrates the architectural and functional evolution of a medieval building transformed into a private hotel and then a school. Its 17th century portal and 16th century façade testify to its historical importance in the tourism heritage.
The House of Justice of the Baths is now owned by the municipality of Tours. Although partially modified over the centuries, its inscription as historic monuments in 1927 underscores its heritage value, linked to its past judicial role and its integration into the urban fabric of the Old Towers.
