Origin and history
The Maison de l'histoire et des traditions de la Haute-Moder is a museum located in Wimmenau, Lower Rhine, in the Grand Est region. It occupies a house adjoining an oil mill from the 17th to 18th century, designed in the architectural style of Bernese Oberland, a Swiss region. This building illustrates the cultural and historical exchanges between Alsace and Switzerland, while at the same time testifying to local craft techniques, including the production of rapeseed oil and nuts via a wood mechanism operated by animal traction.
The oil mill, classified as a historical monument by order of 28 December 1984, is located at 31-32 rue Principale. Its original mechanism, preserved, recalls traditional methods of seed pressure, a major economic activity for Alsatian rural communities before industrialization. The adjacent Swiss house, integrated into the museum, symbolizes the enlivened heritage of this border area, marked by various cultural influences.
The ensemble — mill and house — offers today a museum tour dedicated to the traditions of the Haute-Moder, highlighting the material and immaterial heritage of this Vosges valley. The collections and hybrid architecture (Alsatian and Bernese) make it an emblematic place to understand local history, between agriculture, crafts and cross-border exchanges.
