The house, its outbuildings, as well as the lime oven (Box AB 10): inscription by order of 26 July 2004
Origin and history
The Maison de l'Ilet Oscar, listed as a Historic Monument, is an 18th century architectural testimony located in the commune of François, Martinique. This complex consists of a main house, a tank, a wind box, a kitchen and an original lime oven dating back to the late eighteenth century. The house has been moved from Thierry Island, making it a rare example of heritage relocation.
The site also reveals traces of an Amerindian habitat between the house and the lime oven, highlighting an ancient occupation of the site. The whole was protected by order of 26 July 2004, covering the house, its outbuildings and the lime oven. This monument thus illustrates both the colonial history of Martinique and the pre-Columbian remains of the island.
The location of the Maison de l'Ilet Oscar, on the Oscar island at the François, is approximate, with a cartographic accuracy deemed fair (level 5/10). This site, although little documented in its precise uses, reflects the lifestyles and construction techniques of the time, especially with its lime oven, a key element for the production of materials in colonies.
