Origin and history
The House of the Mothe, classified Historic Monument, dates from the 15th and 17th centuries. Its street façade has been retouched, while the eastern and southern facades retain Gothic windows. An octagonal staircase turret, open on three sides, marks the corner of the courtyard. The low door, in basket handle, and the full-core screw staircase suggest a construction after the eastern façade, masking an ancient Gothic door.
Inside, the large room on the first floor features a ground-beamed ceiling and a 165 tiles wall ceramic, made by the workshop in Teruel. This work commemorates the victory of the Marshal of Lamothe over the Spaniards in Lérida on October 7, 1642. The marshal, rewarded by Louis XIII for his successes in Tarragona and Villefranche, would have stayed in Narbonne, where he received his marshal's staff.
The building, registered by order of 19 December 1946, is located at 63 Right Street. Its staircase, with a nine-sided capital and radiant slabs, as well as architectural details, reflect the transformations undergone over the centuries. Approximate GPS location and sources such as Monumentum complete the available data.
