Origin and history
The Maison de la Vinatrie, located at 15 rue Mérindot in Saint-Martin-de-Ré, is a wooden building probably built in the 17th century. This building underwent notable modifications in the 19th century, including structural improvements. A sandstone decorated with sculptures representing clusters of grapes, separating the first two levels, could be a later reported element, adding a distinctive decorative touch to the building.
The building was officially listed as historic monuments by order of 15 January 2002. This protection covers the entire house, including its architectural and decorative features. The heritage recognition underlines its importance in the historical landscape of Saint-Martin-de-Ré, a commune of Charente-Maritime marked by a rich architectural past.
The house of the Vinatrie is part of the wider context of the island of Re, where wood-paned constructions were common. These buildings often reflected local economic activities, such as viticulture, evoked by grape clusters. In the 17th century, the island was a commercial and military crossroads, while in the 19th century, it underwent changes related to the evolution of construction techniques and residential needs.
