Origin and history

The house of Laparre de Saint-Sernin, located in Dieupentale in Occitanie, is a small cartreuse built in 1755, during the 3rd quarter of the 18th century. This monument is distinguished by its refined architecture, including a living room decorated with golden rock gypsies, typical of the artistic style of the era. Although modest in size, this residence reflects the influence of the aristocratic decorative tendencies of its time, adapted to a more intimate scale.

Originally, the property was organized around two outbuildings, now in ruins, accessible by two identical monumental gates. These elements, as well as the grid separating the courtyard from the stables of the terrace, underline the importance attached to symmetry and order in the layout of spaces. The facades and roofs of the house, as well as the interior of the large living room, were protected by an inscription to the Historic Monuments in 2006, recognizing their heritage value.

The house of Laparre de Saint-Sernin illustrates the way of life of the provincial elites under the Ancien Régime, where secondary residences, such as this Chartreuse, served as both a place of retirement and social representation. The gypsies of the living room, characteristic of the rock, show the taste for luxurious ornamentation, while the layout of the outbuildings reveals a hierarchical domestic organization, typical of the rural properties of the period.
