Origin and history
The so-called house of Ligier Richier, located in Saint-Mihiel, is associated with the famous 16th century sculptor. According to historian Dumont, it was purchased in 1535 by Ligier Richier for his personal use. From this period, a wooden and terracotta ceiling remains on the ground floor, now classified as a Historic Monument since 1921. This ceiling, along with other architectural elements, testify to the artistic importance of this place.
The drapery fireplace, formerly located in the street room, is now preserved in the town hall of Han-sur-Meuse. Ascribed to Ligier Richier, she illustrates the sculptor's talent and influence in the region. Other elements, such as the monumental kitchen fireplace and the courtyard well, probably date from the seventeenth century, while the facades were modified in the eighteenth century.
The architectural transformations, including the elevation of the facade prior to the 18th century, reflect the stylistic and functional evolutions of the house. Despite these changes, some original elements, such as the carved ceiling, remain valuable testimonies of Ligier Richier's era and his artistic heritage in the region.
