Facade on the street; vaulted cellar (cad. C 537): entry by order of 15 March 1962

Origin and history

The house of Saint-Thibault, also known as the house of the Orphelines, is an emblematic building of the city of Provins, in the Seine-et-Marne. Located at 50 rue Saint-Thibault in the upper town, this building dates back to the 13th century, a period marked by the medieval peak of Provins, which was then prosperous thanks to the trade and fairs of Champagne. Its architecture reflects the typical style of bourgeois houses of the time, with a facade on street and a vaulted cellar, elements protected since 1962.

The house has been listed as historical monuments since 15 March 1962, a recognition that specifically concerns its facade and vaulted cellar. This ranking demonstrates its heritage importance in a city already rich in medieval monuments. Provins, a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its remains in the Middle Ages, is one of its many preserved buildings, illustrating the urban life and civil architecture of this period.

Although available sources do not specify its original use, its nickname "home of the Orphans" suggests a later charitable or social vocation, frequent in medieval cities where religious or secular institutions took care of the poorest. Today, it is part of the historical path of Provins, attracting visitors for its authenticity and its connection to the medieval past of the region.

Data from the Merimée and Monumentum databases confirm its exact address and location in the Seine-et-Marne department in Île-de-France. These sources also point to the satisfactory accuracy of its geographical location, facilitating its identification in the urban fabric of Provins. No information is available on its current accessibility or possible tourist or residential functions.
