Origin and history

The Maison des arts et de la culture André-Malraux (MAC) was designed by architect Jean Faugeron and inaugurated in 1975 in Créteil, Val-de-Marne. This project, initiated by André Malraux, aimed to create an accessible cultural space for medium-sized cities like Créteil. The building, located in Place Salvador-Allende, comprises three theatres: the Grande Salle (1054 places), the Petite Salle (270 places) and the Satellite (104 places). Since its opening, MAC has offered varied programming, including theatre, dance, music and cinema.

MAC has been led by several notable figures, including Jean Négroni, Jean Morlock (1979-1993), Didier Fusillier, José Montalvo (2016-2024), and Julie Sanerot since 2025. She has played a key role in disseminating original works, such as jazz concerts, exhibitions of international artists (Robert Malaval, Jean-Pierre Le Boul'ch), and festivals, including the International Women's Film Festival since 1985. The site also housed a media library and art library.

In 2026, MAC will celebrate its 50th anniversary with an event entitled "Jubilé", tracing its history and opening up prospects for the future. The current project, "Building ties, making territory", led by Julie Sanerot, strengthens the local anchor and openness to the arts of the movement, in collaboration with institutions such as the National Choreographic Centre of Créteil. MAC hosts about 100,000 spectators a year, including 30,000 young people, and remains a major player in contemporary creation.

MAC relies on associate artists, such as composer Lucie Antunes, choreographer Alexander Vantournhout, or author Élise Chatauret, to broaden its reach. It accompanies both emerging and international talent through residences and coproductions. Its role in cultural democratization and artistic innovation makes it a must in Île-de-France.
