Origin and history

The House of the Chanoines of Landunvez is a 16th century building, probably built in the second half of this century to house six canons installed in the commune after the foundation of the Kersaint collegiate in 1523. The act of foundation, ratified that year, marks the beginning of their presence in Landunvez, although the construction of their house seems to be later.

The architecture of the house consists of a lengther to one floor, supplemented by a perpendicular building containing the staircase, located on the north side. A small, discreet turret at the northwest corner provides access to an upper room and to the attic. The materials used, such as irregular bellows arranged in horizontal strips and low-cut granite blocks, are characteristic of the local buildings of the time.

The harp angle chains, ramps and frames of the openings are made with large granite blocks. This building, inscribed in the Historical Monuments in 1987, reflects the religious and social organization of 16th century Brittany, where collegiate women played a central role in community life.

Today, the House of Chanoines is owned by the municipality of Landunvez. Its exact address, 5 rue Poullouec or 8 Route des Chanoines, bears witness to its anchoring in the local landscape. The accuracy of its location is considered to be satisfactory a priori, although adjustments may be necessary for finer identification.
