Origin and history
La Maison des Dimes is an emblematic building of the medieval city of Peruges, located in the Ain department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built in the 15th century, it is distinguished by its strategic location at the corner of Rue des Contreforts and Rue des Rondes. This building, typical of medieval civil architecture, was initially used to collect tithes, ecclesiastical taxes levied on the harvests and incomes of the inhabitants.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 24 November 1921, the house of the Dimes illustrates the preserved architectural heritage of Peruges. Its street façades, protected by this classification, testify to the historic and cultural significance of this site. Today, it is managed by an association and remains a symbol of local history, attracting visitors to this medieval city.
The house of the tithes is part of a broader context of urban and religious development in the Middle Ages. At that time, tithes played a central role in the local economy, supporting both ecclesiastical institutions and rural communities. This type of building, often located in strategic areas, reflected the social and economic organization of the region, marked by a strong influence of the Church and local lords.
