White Pigeon House: Registration by Order of 23 January 1937
Origin and history
The Maison des Pigeons blancs, located in Saint-Jean-de-Luz in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, is an emblematic example of traditional Basque architecture. It is distinguished by its wooden panels facade, framed by two stone walls that form light corbellations. This type of construction reflects local techniques and adaptation to the climatic constraints of the region.
Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 23 January 1937, this house illustrates the Basque vernacular heritage. Its name, "White Pigeons", could evoke an architectural particularity or a local tradition, although the sources do not specify its exact origin. It is located at 1bis rue de la République, in a central area of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, a coastal town marked by a history of fishing and maritime commerce.
Wood-paned houses like this were common in Basque cities, serving both housing and sometimes as a place of artisanal or commercial activity. Their lightweight structure allowed rapid and economical construction, while offering insulation adapted to ocean climate. Today, the White Pigeons House bears witness to this ancestral know-how, preserved despite urban transformations.
