Origin and history

The house in Parthenay, in the Deux-Sèvres department (New Aquitaine region), is a monument dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. This building, whose facades have been inscribed in the Historical Monuments since 1926, illustrates the civil architecture of this period. Its exact address, 4 rue de la Vau-Saint-Jacques (formerly 81 rue du 14-Jullet), allows to locate it in the historic centre of the city.

The houses of this time in Poitou-Charentes often reflect the prosperity of medieval and renaissant cities, linked to commerce, crafts or local administration. In Parthenay, as in other cities in the region, these buildings served as housing for bourgeois families or notables, while playing a role in urban structure. Their preservation today offers a tangible testimony to the architectural and social evolution of the region between the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
