Origin and history

The House of Angels is a historical monument located in Saumur, in the department of Maine-et-Loire, in the Pays de la Loire region. Built in the 16th century, it represents an example of Renaissance civil architecture in this city marked by its medieval and reborn heritage. His evocative name, though not explained in the sources, suggests a particular symbol or decoration related to angels, frequent in buildings of that time.

The house was listed as Historic Monuments by order of June 18, 1926, reflecting its recognized heritage importance from the early twentieth century. Available sources, including the Mérimée and Monumentum base, indicate that it is located at 13 rue Haute-Sainte-Pierre, although a GPS approximation also places it at 15 rue Fourrier. This duality of addresses reflects the challenges of precise location for some old buildings.

At the time of its construction, Saumur was a dynamic city, marked by its strategic role between Anjou and Touraine, as well as the presence of the Loire as a major commercial axis. Bourgeois houses such as the Angels' houses illustrated the prosperity of some inhabitants, often linked to trade, crafts or local nobility.
