Origin and history

The House of Engineers is an iconic building located on the island of La Réunion, French overseas department and region in the Indian Ocean. Built in the fourth quarter of the 19th century, it is distinguished by its architecture representative of this colonial era. Located at 638 rue Amiral Bosse, in the commune of the Port, it embodies the historical and cultural heritage of Réunion.

Classified as historical monuments since 14 March 2014, this house is fully protected, including outbuildings, fences, gate and floor. Its inscription reflects its heritage importance and the desire to preserve the architectural traces of this period. The accuracy of its location is estimated as fair, with an address confirmed by the Merimée database.

In the 19th century, La Réunion was marked by a mainly agricultural economy, centred on the cultivation of sugar cane. The bourgeois houses, like that of the Engineers, often reflected the social status of their owners, linked to port or industrial activities. These houses also served as meeting places for local elites, playing a role in the social and economic life of the island.
