Origin and history

The Maison de la Chavonnière, located in Veretz in the Centre-Val de Loire region, is a 16th and 18th century building. It is distinguished by its architecture combining a long low building and a back row, some of which could go back to the late 16th or early 17th century. Originally, the house was extended by a wing and a pavilion, but these elements were modified in the 19th century: the pavilion was dismantled and rebuilt a kilometre away, while the contiguous wing was destroyed.

La Chavonnière is best known for having been the home of the writer Paul-Louis Courier (1772-1825), literary figure and polemist of the early 19th century. The monument was listed as historical monuments on 27 September 1972, protecting its facades and roofs. Today, the house retains its historical character, although its appearance has been partially altered by the 19th century transformations.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its heritage importance in the Indre-et-Loire department. The precise location of the Chavonnière is the 22 Chemin de la Chavonnière, in Veretz, in a rural setting typical of the Touraine. The building illustrates the architectural evolution of bourgeois or intellectual houses in the region, between Renaissance and modern times.
