Origin and history

The house of Beaumontois in Périgord is a historical monument whose posterior part, overlooking the ramparts, probably dates back to the late 13th century or the early 14th century. It is partly based on the medieval enclosure of the city, testifying to its integration into the defensive system of the period. The materials used, such as rubble covered with flat tiles, contrast with the anterior facade made of cut stone, initially covered with slate.

The front part of the house, forming a canopy, underwent a major reconstruction in the 18th century, before being destroyed in the late 19th century. The current building dates from this last period, marking a significant architectural evolution. The facades on the rampart and on Luzier's door, as well as the corresponding roof, were protected by a decree of inscription under the Historical Monuments on 17 May 1952.

Located at 10 Place Jean Moulin in Beaumont-du-Périgord (now Beaumontois-en-Périgord), this house illustrates the superposition of the eras, from the Middle Ages to modern transformations. Its location on ancient ramparts and hybrid structure make it a characteristic example of medieval habitat adapted to future needs, while maintaining traces of its defensive origin.
