Jean de Graville - Sénéchal de Guyenne Founded the bastide of Monpazier in 1284.

Origin and history

The house of Monpazier is part of the architectural complex of the central square of this bastide, founded in 1284 on the order of Jean de Graville, Sénéchal de Guyenne. The square, designed according to an orthogonal plan typical of medieval bastides, was initially lined with 22 corneal buildings on its north and south sides, and six on its east and west sides. Today, only 17 of these buildings remain, including this house, characterized by its facades on the square and its protected roofs since 1962.

The construction of the bastide of Monpazier was in response to a political and strategic will to structure the territory under the authority of the King of England, then Duke of Aquitaine. The covered galleries surrounding the square reflect an urban organization designed to promote trade and community life. The facades and roofs of this house, inscribed in the Historical Monuments, illustrate the heritage importance of these civilian buildings in preserving the medieval architectural identity.

The protected elements of this house, namely its facades on the square and the corresponding roofs, were inscribed by decree of 2 January 1962. This protection underscores their historical and aesthetic value, while at the same time demonstrating efforts to preserve Monpazier's built heritage. The location of the house, on the Place à Cornières, makes it a key element of the urban landscape of this bastide ranked among the most beautiful in France.
