Origin and history
Monpazier's house is part of a remarkable medieval architectural complex, built in 1284 by order of Jean de Graville, Sénéchal de Guyenne. The central square, surrounded by covered galleries on its four sides, originally housed 22 horned buildings on the north and south sides, and 6 on the east and west sides. Today, only 17 of these buildings remain, reflecting the planned urban planning characteristic of the southwestern bastides.
The facades, including the galleries, as well as the roofs, were classified as Historic Monument by order of 23 October 1961. The protection also extends to the part of the ground beneath the galleries. These houses, both private and communal, illustrate the social and commercial organization of medieval bastides, where galleries served as covered spaces for merchants and artisans.
The precise location of the house is indicated as being place in Cornières (or 29 Rue Saint-Jacques) in Monpazier, in the Dordogne department (code Insee 24280). Geographical accuracy is estimated as fair (note 5/10), reflecting the limitations of available historical data. Sources also mention a Creative Commons license for associated visuals, without specifying the current accessibility of the site (visit, rental, or accommodation).
