The staircase on courtyard, the façade on the square and the entire roof (Box H 456) : inscription by decree of 11 September 1963
Origin and history
This house, located in Sarlat-la-Canéda, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, dates partly from the sixteenth century, including the courtyard side, where a staircase turret and a rounded door give access to an inner courtyard. Architectural elements, such as flat Corinthian capital pilasters or fluted pilasters surrounding second-floor openings, reflect the stylistic influences of this period. A cross-cut, shelled, pediment-shaped skylight completes the set.
The façade on the Place de la Liberté and the staircase on the courtyard, as well as the roof, were protected by a registration order under the Historical Monuments on 11 September 1963. These protections underline the heritage value of this house, representative of Sarlat's civil architecture in the 16th and 17th centuries.
The decorative details, such as the Corinthian capitals and the canned pilasters, illustrate the care given to the ornamentation of bourgeois or notable homes of the time. The precise location, in 1 Place de la Liberté, corresponds to the former Place de la Mairie, a central location in the medieval town of Sarlat-la-Canéda.
