Origin and history

This corner house, located at the entrance of Renan Street in Besançon, is distinguished by its heterogeneous materials: woollons coated on Renan Street, coated wooden panels and cut stone on Grande Rue. Built on a vaulted cradle basement, it incorporates an interior staircase located in the entrance. Although it was hit with alignment in the 18th century to expand the street, it persisted despite urban transformations.

The dates of its facades reveal a complex history. The one on Renan Street, dating from the first half of the sixteenth century, was raised from one floor to the seventeenth century. The façade on the Grande Rue, mostly made of 17th century wood, preserves a piece of stone with bays from the late 15th or early 16th century. An arcade, pierced at an indefinite time, and a door on the 1st floor, possible vestige of an old outside staircase, testify to the successive developments.

Classified as a Historic Monument, this house saw its facades inscribed by decree of 28 November 1932, and its roof protected on 27 January 1942. Its entrance, Renan Street, was modified by the expansion of a bay, while the 19th-century interior staircase probably replaced an exterior staircase. These elements illustrate its architectural evolution over centuries.
