The facade on the square and the cover: inscription by decree of 25 October 1937
Origin and history
This house, located in 13 Place du 8-Septembre (formerly Place Saint-Pierre) in Besançon, is a civil building representative of urban architecture between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Its construction is part of a period of stylistic transition, marked by the influence of the Lights and the early industrial era. The building is distinguished by its facade on the square and its roof, protected by a decree of inscription under the title of Historical Monuments in 1937.
Besançon, then fortified city and administrative center of Franche-Comté, experienced economic and cultural growth at that time. Bourgeois houses, like this one, reflect the social status of their owners, often local notables (merchands, magistrates or officers). Their location in central squares, such as the former Saint Peter's Square, underlines their role in the public and commercial life of the city. These buildings generally combine classical elements (symmetry, architectural orders) and technical innovations related to materials.
The inscription of the façade and cover in 1937 is evidence of the early heritage recognition of this type of building. On that date, protection criteria often focus on elements visible from public space, as here. The precise location of the monument, confirmed by the Mérimée and INSEE bases (common code 25056), makes it a landmark in the historical center of Besançon, now integrated into the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region.
