Origin and history

The house in Besançon, built in the 18th century, is a typical example of the urban architecture of this time. It is distinguished by an ordered facade on the rue de la Préfecture, in harmony with the neighbouring building (28 rue de la Préfecture). The interior houses a masonry main staircase up to the first floor, then a frame staircase, as well as a wooden secondary staircase with a baluster ramp. The court includes outbuildings such as sheds, a stable with workshop and a stake, reflecting the domestic and functional organization of bourgeois houses of the time.

The building was designed around 1775 by the architect Claude-Antoine Colombot for the seminary, on land belonging to him. Its arched facade, imposed by the city controller Charles-François Longin despite Colombot's preferences for a cut-out, was designed to create a semi-circle place in front of the new stewardship. A fountain, originally planned against this concave facade to supply the area with water, was finally built in a nearby alley, now Charles Nodier Street. This project illustrates the tensions between architects' urban visions and local authorities.

Classified as a Historic Monument by order of 22 October 1937, the house is protected for its facades and attices. Its exact address, 5 rue Charles-Nodier and 28 rue de la Préfecture, make it a key element of the bisontin heritage. The accuracy of its location is estimated to be poor (note 5/10), but its history remains documented thanks to Monumentum archives and internal data. The neighbouring building (28 rue de la Prefecture) and its counterpart (31 rue de la Prefecture) share a common architectural history, linked to the urbanization of this area under the Old Regime.
