Origin and history
The house at 28 quai Vauban in Besançon is a historic monument whose facade and roof were inscribed by ministerial decree on 16 September 1933. This building is closely linked to the defensive history of the city, being associated with the Citadelle and the urban enclosure of Besançon, themselves classified and protected for their architectural and archaeological remains.
The Besançon urban compound, some of which date back to ancient times, was further registered on 10 September 2019. This protection concerns various remains, such as the ramparts between the bastioned towers of Rivotte and Brégille, the guard corps of the eighteenth century (such as that of Chamars), or the remains buried under the hospital Saint-Jacques. These elements illustrate the evolution of the city's fortifications, adapted to military and strategic needs throughout the centuries.
The location of the house on the Vauban wharf places the monument in a major historical area of Besançon, marked by its military heritage and defensive town planning. The dock, bordering the loop of the Doubs, was a key point for the control of the city and its river access. The accuracy of the current location is estimated as "passible" (note 5/10), perhaps reflecting uncertainties about the exact footprint of associated remains.
Although the practical information on opening up to the public, the visit or services offered (such as guest rooms) are not specified, the house remains an architectural testimony integrated with a wider defensive set. Its inscription in the title of Historical Monuments underlines its heritage importance, particularly in the context of the preservation of the fortified urban complexes of Franche-Comté.
