Origin and history

The house at 31 rue du Faubourg-de-Besançon in Montbéliard dates from the 1st quarter of the 17th century, as evidenced by the date of 1610 engraved above the front door. This building, partly made of wood, illustrates the domestic architecture of the period in this border region marked by Germanic and French influences.

In the 18th century, a right wing in return on the courtyard and a staircase were added, while between 1823 and 1859, a left wing was built and an old barn transformed into a marechal-ferrant workshop. The latter, built on the site of a garden, reflects the evolution of local artisanal activities in the 19th century.

The house is also famous for being the birthplace of the painter Jules Émile Zing (1882–1942), an artist whose work remains associated with Montbéliard's cultural history. Classified as a Historic Monument in 1989 for its street façade and roof, it now embodies a preserved architectural and memorial heritage.
