Origin and history

The house of Montbéliard, dated the 1st quarter of the 17th century, is located in a district planned by Frédéric de Württemberg and designed by architect Heinrich Schickardt. This area, marked by structured urbanization, bears witness to the influence of Württemberg princes on the city at that time. The house, probably built around 1610 as its neighbour, has a street façade and a roof inscribed in the Historic Monuments since 1989.

Originally, the building included a barn located at the site of the current garden. The riverside building, added in 1825, housed a tannery built for Pierre Louis Sahler. This evolution reflects the adaptation of urban spaces to local economic activities, such as leather work, common in the region in the 19th century.

The building, although partially modified, retains architectural features characteristic of the early 17th century. His inscription in the title of Historic Monuments underscores his heritage interest, linked to both his urban history and his role in the past economic fabric of Montbéliard. The location, at 29 rue du Faubourg-de-Besançon, makes it a witness to the expansion of the city under the influence of the Dukes of Württemberg.
