Origin and history

This house located in Montbéliard, in the Doubs department, is an example of civil architecture of the 4th quarter 16th century and 1st quarter 17th century. The monument consists of two separate houses, visible on the plan of 1715–18, and united in one parcel after 1859. The house on the left underwent major alterations in the 4th quarter of the 20th century, partially altering its original appearance.

The façade overlooking Place Saint-Martin (cadastre BX 119) was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 13 August 1989. This classification protects an architectural element representative of the transition between Renaissance and classical times, typical of the Montbéliard region, marked by its Protestant history and planned urban planning.

Available sources, including Monumentum and Merimée, indicate an approximate location (estimated at 5/10) at 1 place Saint-Martin. No information is provided on the current use of the building (visit, rental, etc.), or on any historic owners or sponsors. The building, however, illustrates the evolution of urban habitats in a city then under the influence of the princes of Württemberg.
