Origin and history
The Maison du Bailli, located on Rue du Paradis in Mâcon (Saône-et-Loire), has been a building listed as a Historic Monument since 2007. It is distinguished by its composite architecture, combining a north wing of the 15th century and an east wing of the 17th century. The house preserves a tower of Gallo-Roman enclosure of the third century, vestige of the ancient castrum of Mâcon, which flanks the building is. This mixture of periods reflects the urban evolution of the city, from antiquity to modern times.
The house was occupied by Mâcon's bailiff as early as 1240, a royal officer in charge of the local judicial and military administration. In the 15th century, the oldest north wing was home to a spinning workshop, as evidenced by the pierced stones of the west façade, used to dry wire skeins. In the 17th century, a square tower housing a spiral staircase was added to connect the two wings, while the inner courtyard houses a water pump of the same period.
The changes continued in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, notably with the overhaul of the north façade and modifications on the tower. The ensemble, including the plot, was protected in 2007 for its historical and architectural interest, illustrating both the Gallo-Roman heritage of Mâcon and its medieval and classical development.
