Maison dit du Brouard : inscription by order of 20 July 1942

Origin and history

The House of the Brouard, located in Montmorillon in the department of Vienna (Nouvelle-Aquitaine), is a historical monument whose most remarkable element is its door in a braid, attributed to the sixteenth century. This architectural feature, typical of the Renaissance, suggests construction or renovation at this time, although the available sources do not specify the exact date of its construction. The building has been listed in the Historical Monuments Inventory since July 20, 1942, reflecting its heritage value recognized by the authorities.

Montmorillon, a town in the former Poitou-Charentes region, was an important crossroads in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, marked by trade and cultural exchanges. Homes with half-timbered or decorative elements, such as a braided door, reflect the prosperity of some bourgeois or artisanal families of the time. These buildings were often used as housing, workshops or trading venues, playing a central role in everyday life.

The House of Brouard, now owned by the commune, may have had a similar function, although the archives do not detail its precise historical use.
