Fronts and roofs of the house; ruins of the mill (cf. E 266) : entry by order of 17 June 1988

Origin and history

The Maison du Gaoulé and its mill, located in the town of Diamant in Martinique, constitute an architectural complex inscribed in the Historical Monuments since 1988. This site is representative of the built heritage of colonial times, where agricultural dwellings were often accompanied by mills for the processing of crops, particularly sugar cane, a major economic activity of the island at this time.

The inscription under the title of Historical Monuments specifically concerns the facades and roofs of the house, as well as the ruins of the mill, identified under the reference cadastral E 266. This classification reflects the desire to preserve the material remains of the economic and social history of Martinique, marked by the sugar farm and the organisation of agricultural estates around the houses. These ensembles played a central role in local life, combining residential, productive and sometimes defensive functions.

The location of this monument, in the south of Martinique, reflects the geographical distribution of the former sugar farms, often located near the coast to facilitate export. Today, these vestiges offer tangible evidence of the constructive techniques and lifestyles of the past centuries, in an island context marked by cultural exchanges between Europe, Africa and the Americas.
