Origin and history

The Goulet House is a civilian building located in Prayssas, Lot-et-Garonne department, New Aquitaine. Built in the 16th century, it preserves a fireplace dated 1559, which bears witness to its Renaissance origin. Its initial architecture, marked by cross windows, reflects the aesthetic cannons of this period, mixing residential function and discreet defensive elements, typical of the rural noble houses of the era.

At the beginning of the seventeenth century, a facade with a gallery was added in front of the main façade, accompanied by a dovecote tower on the south side. This extension illustrates the evolution of lifestyles and the influence of emerging classical architectures, while maintaining an agricultural utility with the dovecote, symbol of social status. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the whole, initially enclosed with walls, was radically reshaped to become a farm, with commons organized around a courtyard (grange, bread oven, stable).

The house of the Goulet was listed as historical monuments on 15 February 2008 for its architectural and historical interest. Its U-shaped plan, its decorative elements (lined, windows with cross-sections) and its transformation into a farm make it a representative example of adapting seigneurial housing to rural economic needs.
