Origin and history
The House of the Governor of Bellême is a private hotel located in the city of Bellême, in the department of Orne in Normandy. This monument, partially inscribed in the Historical Monuments in 1989 for its entrance portal, is distinguished by a complex architectural history. It replaces the old hotel in Fontenay, where it preserves some elements such as a staircase and remains of the guard room. Major transformations took place in the 17th and 18th centuries, including the addition of a characteristic entrance porch, while interior developments date mainly from the 19th century.
The present building consists of several bodies of buildings of various periods, forming a heteroclite set at the rear. The porch, built in the late 17th or early 18th century, gives access to a covered passage with exposed soles and pea ceiling. Inside, the office features panelling, the dining room retains 19th-century woodwork, and the large living room combines a 19th-century triangular ceiling with an alcove and 18th-century elements. These details reflect the stylistic and functional evolution of the building over the centuries.
The House of Governor derives its name from its connection with Pierre de Fontenay, Sire de la Reynière, appointed governor of Perche and captain of Bellême in 1590. Although the current hotel was built on the foundations of its home, only the portal (with its vantals) is now protected under the Historic Monuments, reflecting the historical and architectural importance of the site. Sources, such as the Merimée and Monumentum base, highlight its role in local heritage, between medieval heritage and modern transformations.
