Origin and history

The Maison du Laussat, located in Viellenave-de-Navarrenx in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, is a typical example of an 18th-century Belarusian rural complex. This historic monument consists of a master house, a gallery house, as well as adjacent farm buildings, all structured around a main courtyard preceded by a stable courtyard. The spatial organisation reflects the agricultural and social practices of the time, with a clear separation between living, working and storage spaces.

The gallery overlooking a wall pierced by an arch marks the transition between the two courtyards, illustrating the functional and aesthetic architecture of the wealthy farms of Béarn. The site, registered with the Historical Monuments by order of 12 November 2003, also includes the house, its communes, its courtyards and two gardens. Its official address, 3 chemin de Laussat, confirms its anchoring in the local landscape, while its GPS location is considered "a priori satisfactory".

The whole is a testament to the rural economy of the eighteenth century, where the master houses coexisted with the housing of the farmers and the spaces dedicated to the breeding or the cultivation. These farms, often autonomous, played a central role in community life, serving both as a place of production, trade and residence. Their preservation today offers an overview of the social hierarchies and agricultural techniques of the Ancien Régime.
