Origin and history

The House of the Prior of Beaulieu-lès-Loches is an outbuilding of the monastery, located at the southwest corner of the cloister's meadow, adjacent to the abbey church. It is distinguished by two square turrets at south-west and south-east angles, as well as a north facade extended by a more recent building. A short turret, supported by a tube, marks the angle between the house and a contemporary wall. Access to the garden is done by a door dated the eighteenth century, late addition to the medieval structure.

This monument, classified as a historical monument since 1949, illustrates the hybrid architecture of the 15th and 18th centuries. The facades, roofs and the garden door (cadastre B 604) are protected by decree. The house occupies a symbolic place in the abbey as a whole, testifying to the architectural transformations associated with its use as a primary residence and then as a civil building.

The building is part of an urban context marked by the presence of the abbey, around which the local life was organized. The 18th century modifications, such as the garden door, reflect an adaptation to the residential or administrative needs of the time. Today, its official address (place de la Mairie and 7 place du Maréchal-Leclerc) and its Insee code (37020) connects it to the commune of Beaulieu-lès-Loches, in the department of Indre-et-Loire.
