Origin and history

The Maison du Rouréou, also known as Maison Gaudet, is an emblematic achievement of Hungarian architect Antti Lovag. Located in Tourrettes-sur-Loup in the Alpes-Maritimes, it embodies the current of architecture-sculpture. The first plans date back to 1968, but the construction site, which began in 1967 after a design phase including a life-size model, experienced multiple interruptions. The construction was finally completed in 2008, despite the listing of the whole as historical monuments in 1998.

The house is distinguished by its organic design, composed of interlocking half-spheres and communication pipes, marrying the rocky relief of the site. This structure, almost invisible in the landscape, rests on a light concrete frame projected. The project was commissioned by Antoine Gaudet in 1969, but local opposition and administrative difficulties delayed its completion until 1986-1989. The work was also awarded the 20th Century Heritage label in 2001.

Ranked as a historic monument for its totality (main house, ancillary buildings and parcel), the Maison du Rouréou illustrates the architectural audacity of Lovag. Its integration into nature and its absence of a regular plan make it a unique example of futuristic habitat.
