Façades sur rues et slopes de Roofing Correspondents (Case F 1052) : inscription by decree of 22 June 1956

Origin and history

La Maison du Sabotier, located in La Charité-sur-Loire in the Nièvre department, is a monument dated from the 1st quarter of the 16th century. This building, inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 22 June 1956, is distinguished by its facades on streets and the corresponding roof slopes, which constitute the protected elements. Its exact address, 2 rue des Hôtelleries and 22 rue du Petit-Rivage, places this monument in the heart of a historic district of the city.

Charité-sur-Loire, a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its role in medieval history and Benedictine abbey, was a place of passage and exchange in the 16th century. The houses of this era, like the Sabotier, reflect the civil architecture of the nascent Renaissance in Burgundy. Their preservation makes it possible to understand the urban organization and construction techniques of the period, in a region marked by river trade and handicrafts.

The information available on this monument comes mainly from the Merimée base and Monumentum. Although the details of its original use or its occupants are rare, its name evokes a connection to the sabotier trade, essential in a rural society where wood was a major resource. The protection of its facades and roofs underlines its heritage importance, while suggesting significant local architectural or historical value.
