Origin and history

The House of the 15th century, located Place de l'Église in Saint-Sernin-sur-Rance, is a typical example of late medieval civil architecture. Although its façade has asymmetries (windows of different shapes, non-aligned seat fractures), it probably forms a coherent set built or redesigned between the late 15th and early 16th centuries. The ground floor, widely open on the street, has three large bays: two covered with segmental arches with irregular harps (suggesting a resumption), and a third with lintel and discharge arch. A nearby chamfered door completes this commercial level, reflecting a commercial or artisanal vocation.

The first floor is distinguished by its windows with crossed frames and prismatic bases, surmounted for one of a curvilinear gable and pinacles, for the other of a mulched larmal. These details, along with the staggered highlights, testify to a rare decorative care for a rural bourgeois house. The second floor, more sober, features two stone windows whose mouldings extend those of the windows, while a later added balcony (iron consoles) partially alters access. The ensemble, protected since 1934 for its facade, illustrates the transition between the flamboyant Gothic and the early Renaissance in Rouergue.

Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 26 March 1934, this house embodies the medieval civil heritage of Aveyron. Its state of preservation and its architectural details (summary adorned with an IHS, complex mouldings) suggest an easy sponsor, perhaps a merchant or a notable local. The location on the Church Square, the heart of the village, reinforces its importance in the urban fabric of Saint-Sernin-sur-Rance, a village marked by religious history (neighbourhood college) and regional trade.
