Origin and history
The 15th century house, located on 1 rue du Château in Loches (Indre-et-Loire), is an old mansion whose main construction dates back to the 15th century. It is located in the lower town, at the foot of the hillside of the fortress, close to the medieval enclosure. Its facades and roofs, excluding the ground floor of the west facade, were inscribed as historical monument by order of 27 June 1962.
The house has typical architectural features of its time, such as stone-snout windows and a curved pediment-lighting skylight. The bays overlooking a small inner courtyard have retained their original decor. A gallery, supported by ungrounded stone columns, also remains in this courtyard. The building was restored in the early 1980s.
The building is representative of the medieval urban habitat of Loches, a city marked by its fortified past and its historical role in Touraine. Its location, in the rue du Château linking the lower town to the fortified city, highlights its integration into the urban fabric protected by the ramparts. The protected elements include the facades of the upper floors and the corresponding roofs, as specified in the Merimée base.
The house is located precisely at the address 1 rue du Château, 37600 Loches, in the department of Indre-et-Loire (region Centre-Val de Loire). Its Insee communal code is 37132. Although its access to the public is not explicitly detailed in the sources, its status as a historic monument makes it a significant heritage element of the city.
