Origin and history
The 15th century House, located Place de la Liberté in Castelsarrasin (Tarn-et-Garonne), is a rare civilian vestige of the late Middle Ages in this region. This building, now classified as a Historic Monument for its facade, is said to have succeeded an ancient castle today disappeared. Its architecture is distinguished by four windows spread over two floors, including those on the first floor, more richly decorated, although their sleds and crumbs have disappeared over the centuries.
The protection of this monument dates back to 1926, when its street façade was inscribed by ministerial decree. The 15th century openings, characteristic of the transition between Gothic and Renaissance, illustrate the evolution of the construction techniques and aesthetic canons of the period. The absence of documents detailing its original use or its occupants leaves a mystery about its precise role in the medieval city.
Castelsarrasin, then integrated into Toulouse County before joining the crown of France, was a strategic place between the Garonne and Tarn valleys. Bourgeois houses like this often reflected the social status of their owners, probably local notables or merchants taking advantage of the commercial position of the city. Their preservation offers a tangible testimony of urban life at the hinge of the 15th and 16th centuries.
