Façades and roofs on the courtyard bordering the road, gallery with two arches and wells (under the gallery): inscription by decree of 21 July 1947
Origin and history
The 16th century house is a monument located in Chavannes-sur-Suan, an old town now integrated into the new town of Nivigne-et-Suan, in the department of Ain. Dating from the 4th quarter of the 16th century, this house is representative of the civil architecture of this period in the region. It was listed as a historical monument by order of 21 July 1947, reflecting its heritage importance.
The protection specifically concerns facades and roofs on the courtyard bordering the road, as well as a two arcade gallery and a well located under this gallery. These architectural elements, typical of bourgeois or rural houses of the time, reflect the lifestyles and construction techniques of the late Renaissance in France. The house is located in a rural context, where the buildings of this period often served as residences for wealthy families or local notables.
The department of Ain, where this monument is located, was at that time a region marked by a mainly agricultural economy, with increasing trade thanks to its geographical location. The houses of this period, such as that of Chavannes-sur-Suan, played a central role in the social and economic organization of the villages, sometimes serving as places of assembly or trade. Their preservation now allows us to better understand the evolution of landscapes and lifestyles in this part of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
