Origin and history
A typical example of civil architecture of this period is the 16th century church square in Fontaines-en-Sologne. Built in wooden panels and bricks, it is distinguished by its posterior facade having retained its primitive appearance, with a ground floor masonry stonework. This building could have been used as a dwelling for artisans who had worked on the construction or restoration of the nearby church, reflecting the close link between habitat and religious buildings at that time.
Prior to its restoration, the main façade had a coated masonry on the ground floor, while the floor was made of wood and brick. The communes, located in the left wing, share the same constructive techniques, with traces of chimney visible on the side façade. These architectural elements illustrate the common construction methods in the villages of Sologne in the 16th century, where wood and bricks were widely used.
Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 6 March 1948, this house bears witness to the local history and craftsmanship of the time. Its location, facing the church gate, suggests a harmonious integration into the medieval and reborn urban fabric of Fontaines-en-Sologne. The accuracy of its location remains moderate, with an official Church place address, although GPS coordinates indicate an approximation nearby.
