The façade: inscription by decree of 27 September 1948

Origin and history

The 18th century house, located in Excideuil, Dordogne, is a historical monument whose facade, classified by decree of 27 September 1948, bears witness to the refined civil architecture of this period. The facade, the only protected element, has a terrace resting on an entablement, framed by four flat pilasters surmounted by curved capitals adorned with bay garlands. These details, as well as the rounded cochère door decorated with a fish scale and shell pattern, illustrate the care given to the exterior ornamentation, typical of the bourgeois or aristocratic houses of the eighteenth century.

The body of the rear house has partially collapsed, leaving only this emblematic facade, which also retains interior elements of the period such as the woodwork and the bumper. The precise address, 12 rue Jean-Jaurès, and GPS location confirm its anchoring in the city center of Excideuil. Although the sources do not specify its original use, this type of house often reflects the social status of its owners, linked to local government, commerce or provincial nobility.

The protection of the façade in 1948 underscores its heritage interest, particularly for its carved decorations and its relative state of conservation. The photographs available, such as that of Father Igor under Creative Commons license, allow us to appreciate architectural details, while the location is considered "a priori satisfactory" (note 7/10). No information is provided on its current accessibility, whether visitation, rental or accommodation.
