Origin and history

The wooden house in portico of Château-Arnoux-Saint-Auban is a monument located in the municipality of the same name, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. This type of construction, although uncommon in this region, illustrates traditional architectural techniques adapted to the local resources and needs of the inhabitants. In the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, wooden houses were often associated with artisanal or commercial activities.

They served as a place of life, but also as a meeting point for local exchanges. Their portico could house merchants or protect work spaces, reflecting a social organization centered on community and local commerce.
