Origin and history
The house located in Faou, Brittany, is a historical monument whose street façade has a slate-smelling wood panel, while the side façade is built of quartz microdiorite cut stone. Originally, a wooden staircase, now disappeared, completed the whole. This building illustrates the hybrid construction techniques (wood and stone) typical of the region at that time.
The first studies, conducted in 1996 by Christel Douard and Catherine Toscer, dated the construction of the house in the second half of the 16th century, with a southern part of the structure being rebuilt in the 17th century. However, a dendrochronological analysis carried out in 2020 by Valentine Guillevic revealed that the wood on the facade and floor had been implemented between 1518 and 1541, thus delaying the construction period half a century earlier than the initial hypothesis.
The house was listed in the Historic Monuments by order of May 8, 1934, recognizing its heritage value. Its official address, 1 Place des Fusillés-et-Resistants (formerly Place des Halles), places the monument in the heart of the village of Faou, in the Finistère. The contradictions between the dates underline the importance of modern scientific methods to refine the knowledge of built heritage.
