This building is part of the National Estate of the Château de Villers-Cotterêts established by Decree No. 2022-906 of 17 June 2022. The interior parts were classified as historic monuments in full and automatically by this decree.

Origin and history

The Maison forêts de l'Orangerie is a building located in the town of Villers-Cotterêts, in the department of Aisne, in the Hauts-de-France region. This monument is an integral part of the National Estate of Villers-Cotterêts Castle, a collection protected by decree since June 2022. Its interior parts have been classified as Historic Monuments, highlighting its heritage and architectural importance.

Villers-Cotterêts, located in the former region of Picardie, is a city marked by a rich historical past, especially linked to the forest and the management of royal or national estates. Forest houses, such as the Orangery, often played a key role in the administration of wooded areas and in the reception of visitors or maintenance staff. These buildings reflect the territorial organisation and local economic activities, centred on forestry and natural resource management.

The classification of the Forest House of Orangery in 2022 is part of a desire to preserve the heritage linked to the National Domaine of Villers-Cotetres. This decree allowed the entire interior of the building to be protected, thereby recognizing its historical and cultural value. The monument is located at 1 Rue Louis Blanc, an address corresponding to its inscription in the Mérimée base, a reference tool for historical monuments in France.
