Origin and history

Gally House, located in Carcassonne, is an emblematic monument of the first half of the 16th century. It is distinguished by its painted ceilings and a turret dating from the beginning of this period. These decorative elements reflect the artistic influences of the Renaissance, especially through family coats arranged in strict hierarchical order, after those of the king and local lords. The paintings, made between 1497 and 1509, adorn only the metopes and are framed with vegetal patterns executed by brush. They represent about 50 different subjects: coats of arms, characters, animals, monsters and various scenes.

In the 19th century, the house underwent major renovations. The inner courtyard was covered and turned into a winter garden, while the staircase was demolished, although the turret retained its Louis XII style door. The large room, once unified, was divided into three distinct spaces: a dining room, a kitchen and a wardrobe. Unfortunately, these changes have led to the concealment of some twenty original painted panels, now covered.

Gally House has been partially protected since 1947, with an inscription under the Historical Monuments for its ground floor ceilings. These elements demonstrate the historic and artistic significance of the site, while illustrating the architectural transformations that have taken place over the centuries. The exact address, 32 rue Jules Sauzede in Carcassonne, allows to locate this heritage in the department of Aude, in the Occitanie region.
