15th century window in the facade on street: inscription by decree of 12 October 1946
Origin and history
The house located at 17 rue Émile-Jamais in Beaucaire (Gard) is a building whose architectural history today is summed up by an emblematic element: a window of the 15th century. This vestige, integrated in a facade that has lost all ancient character, bears witness to the medieval heritage of the city. The window, classified as Historic Monument by order of 12 October 1946, is the only protected element of the construction, stressing its heritage importance despite the overall transformation of the building.
Beaucaire, a strategic city of the historical Languedoc (now Occitanie), was in the 15th century a commercial and political crossroads between Provence and Languedoc. The houses of that time often reflected the prosperity of local merchants or artisans, although their facades were frequently redesigned in the following centuries. The preservation of an original window illustrates the reuse practices of old structures, common in medieval urban centres.
The inscription of the window as a Historical Monument in 1946 is part of a post-Second World War will to preserve the material traces of the past, even fragmentary. This type of protection focused on a specific element (rather than on the entire building) was then a common approach to safeguarding architectural details threatened by modern renovations. Today, this detail offers a rare overview of the 15th century craftsmanship and decorative styles in the region.
