Origin and history

This 18th century house in Nîmes seems to have belonged to the cathedral chapter of the city. It could have been included in the distributions of the buildings of the Grande-Rue made in 1772, under the dependence of the Chapter. Its architecture is distinguished by a shopfront on the ground floor, surmounted by two floors illuminated by bays. The first floor features window doors served by a large shared wrought iron balcony, decorated with decorative panels and various volumes.

The balcony, protected since 1964, consists of an elegant ironwork: three straight panels separated by pilasters, with an oval central medallion surrounded by floral motifs and draperies. The simplest side panels have cross-folded volumes, while the curved round turns offer a double frame highlighting a large flower. This decor illustrates the artisanal know-how of the period, combining functionality and baroque aesthetics.

The precise address, 4 Grande-Rue, and its listing in the inventory of Historic Monuments testify to its heritage importance. Although the GPS location is approximate (accuracy note: 5/10), this house remains an emblematic example of 18th-century Nîmes civil architecture, linked to the religious and commercial history of the city.
