Origin and history

Girardin House is a former fishing house located at the tip in Philibert, on the island of Saint-Pierre, in the archipelago of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon. Built in 1921, this modest house consists of three rooms and an attic, complemented by a saline and a vegetable garden. It served as a seasonal dwelling for a family engaged in inshore fishing between April and October, illustrating the traditional lifestyle of local fishermen.

After the death of Jules Girardin, the last occupant and fisherman, the house was abandoned and gradually degraded. In the 2010s, the association Save the Heritage of the Archipelago acquired it to preserve this emblematic heritage. Restoration work was undertaken to stabilize the structure, rehabilitate saline and cabestan, before the site received €90 000 in support of the Heritage Lotto in 2019.

Girardin House was officially classified as historical monuments by order of 18 February 2020. This heritage recognition was accompanied in April 2020 by the issuance of a 30 000-print postage stamp by La Poste de Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, highlighting this symbol of island heritage. Today, the site is managed by an association and bears witness to the social and economic history of fishing in the archipelago.
