The facade on street (cad. KX 0095): inscription by decree of 31 March 1928

Origin and history

The house located at 2 rue Pilet in Bordeaux is a remarkable testimony of civil architecture of the late 15th century. Its facade, built in wooden panels, is distinguished by a ground floor surmounted by two floors slightly corbelled. The wooden panels on the floors retain traces of mouldings and sculptures, while the leggings of the windows are decorated with small hooked pinnacles, decorative elements characteristic of the flamboyant Gothic.

Classified as a Historic Monument, this house saw its facade on street protected by a registration order on 31 March 1928. The building, now owned by a private company, illustrates the know-how of Bordeaux artisans of the medieval era. Its state of conservation and architectural details make it a rare example of urban habitat of this period in the region.

The location of the house, in the historic centre of Bordeaux, corresponds to an area where commercial and artisanal activity was intense at the end of the Middle Ages. Wood-paned houses, such as this one, often served as housing for merchants or artisans, while sometimes sheltering shops on the ground floor. Their corbelling structure also made it possible to gain space in narrow and lively streets.
